Cyrano de Bergerac

I was really confused when I was reading the beginning of the play. What confused me a lot was that there were no character descriptions, not even simple ones like people who were related. I thought there were too many characters in the beginning and nothing happened for a long time. It started to get better when Cyrano showed up. Cyrano is truly just a ridiculous character. I didn’t like how he was always running around trying to cause trouble. It was like he was trying to get someone to kill him for being such a punk. I thought it was funny how he is such a sensitive guy who writes poetry, and is so self-conscious about his nose he feels that no one could ever love him but he is always looking for a fight. I didn’t really feel bad for him at all during the play because he created all his own problems. He helped his rival suitor get Roxane to fall for him and he made so many enemies that they eventually killed him. I didn’t understand what was so great about Roxane. It seemed like Christian and Cyrano didn’t really know her at all they just decided they were in love with her. Both men just seemed to be in love with being in love. In Cyrano’s love poems about Roxane he really doesn’t say much of anything it’s just a bunch of flowery language with nothing real behind it. Cyrano annoyed me at the end when he finally gets what he has been after the whole play, and then decides he needs to go fight more and ends up being killed. I don’t think he could ever be happy. He just wanted to be a poor tortured soul, and did a good job of achieving it.
